Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
