Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
