Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
