A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
