European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
